The Region of Waterloo is looking for a development partner for what it's calling an innovative affordable housing project.

In a media release, the region said the project will be located at 1388 Highland Road W. in Kitchener and the partner would be responsible for the design and construction.

A request for proposal was issued this week and will remain open until March 22.

The region said a minimum of 30 per cent of the units will have rental prices at or below 80 per cent of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation median market rate.

"The request-for-proposal also outlines the consideration for space within the building that could be leased to a third-party child care provider, as the need for quality child care spaces is great," the release states.

The site on Highland Road W. is one of four region-owned properties that was declared surplus in 2021, with the intent of using it for affordable housing.

"We continue to look at every possible mechanism to create homes for everyone in our community," Coun. Jim Erb, chair of the community and health services committee, said in a statement. "Using regionally-owned lands to increase the number of affordable homes in our community is an important part of our Building Better Futures strategy."
