With snow squalls sweeping across southern Ontario, Environment Canada has now put out a weather alert for a snow squall watch in Waterloo region.

The alert, which was released around 4 a.m. Saturday warns that Kitchener, Cambridge and other areas of the region could see more than 15 centimetres of snowfall later Saturday afternoon and evening.

While the effect of snow off of Lake Huron has eased as of early Saturday morning, Environment Canada predicts it may intensify as the day goes on, particularly to the west and northwest of Kitchener.

Currently, there are no weather alerts in effect for Guelph or around Southern Wellington County.

This comes on the heels of warnings from Environment Canada that parts of southern Ontario may see snowfall between 20 to 40 centimetres by Sunday.

The agency said that potential snow squalls should become less intense by Sunday.

Drivers are warned that travel could be dangerous due to sudden changes in weather, visibility and road surfaces.
