Environment Canada has downgraded snow squall warning to a watch for Waterloo Region and Northern Wellington County Friday.

Many accidents have been reported in the region and some school buses have been delayed.

According to OPP and Waterloo Regional Police, at least 170 accidents have been reported in the region. Many residents are reporting traffic delays and slippery, icy roads.

GO Transit reports that route 25, from the University of Waterloo to Square One in Mississauga, is facing delays of up to 30 minutes because of traffic and weather conditions.

According to the weather agency, snow squalls are expected throughout the morning in Kitchener and in some areas through the rest of the day. Visibility will be significantly reduced because of heavy snow. The snow may also be very dense in some areas, and then within a few kilometres, the sky could be sunny again.

The squalls are caused by winds blowing over water on Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, causing heavy flurries. Environment Canada says squalls might produce up to 10 to 15 cm of snow in the next 12 hours in some areas.

For Kitchener and Waterloo, that amount is expected to be between 5 to 10 centimetres and a high of 1 C.

Slippery road conditions

The Ontario Prov Police are warning of slippery road conditions in the Kitchener and Cambridge areas, and asking people to drive with caution.

Meanwhile, CBC listeners have been describing their morning commutes on Twitter.

School buses delayed

Most school bus routes are delayed in Waterloo Region this morning. Students heading to Southwood Secondary School on several bus routes are facing the longest delays, between 30 to 40 minutes, while most other delays range between 10 to 20 minutes.
