Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner has won his seat as MPP for Guelph in the Ontario election.

"It's a bittersweet moment tonight, to be honest," Schreiner said in an interview with CBC News after he gave his victory speech.

"I am so excited to see [Kitchener Centre candidate] Aislinn Clancy win in a landslide and to show that Greens are here to stay at Queen's Park," he said, but added it was disappointing deputy leader Matt Richter didn't win in Parry-Sound Muskoka.

Schreiner says the party, even with two MPPs, "punch above our weight" and they work across party lines to get work done, and that will continue when they return to Queen's Park.

"We're going to keep working hard. People like their Green MPPs, we just need to spread that to more ridings," he said. "We're going to continue to lead with people power."

With all 81 polls reporting:

  • Schreiner had 34,238 votes.
  • PC Robert Coole had 14,386 votes.
  • Liberal Mustafa Zuberi had 6,874 votes.
  • NDP's Cameron Spence had 3,497 votes.
  • New Blue Party's Carina Fraser had 1,137 votes.

Riding history

In recent history, Progressive Conservative Brenda Elliott held the seat in Guelph from 1995 to 1999 and again when the riding changed to Guelph-Wellington from 1999 to 2003.

In 2003, Liberal Liz Sandals beat Elliott. She was the MPP for Guelph-Wellington from 2003 until 2007 and for Guelph until her retirement in 2018.

Schreiner won his seat for the first time in 2018, then again in 2022.
