Cyclist airlifted to hospital after crash on Victoria Street S. in Kitchener
Police close roads near crash site at Victoria Street S. and West Avenue
A 22-year-old man was seriously hurt after a crash with a car on Monday.
The man was riding his bicycle around 10:20 a.m. near Victoria Street S. and West Avenue when the crash happened, police said.
Emergency crews were called and the man was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.
The Iron Horse Trail crosses Victoria Street S. at West Avenue. Cyclists and pedestrians have called the crossing problematic and dangerous.
Signs are posted asking people to cross at the lit intersection, but painted lines on the multi-use path lead users to an uncontrolled crossing behind City Cafe bakery and Golden Dynasty restaurant.
The City of Kitchener has announced plans to add a "refuge island" — a place where cyclists and pedestrians can stop after they cross a single lane of traffic and wait for the second lane to clear.
It's part of $2.65 million project to revamp the 5.5 kilometre trail.
Roads in the area were closed immediately after the crash. Waterloo Regional Police Service said the investigation is ongoing.
