Heat warning in effect for Hamilton this Canada Day
Daytime highs are forecast to reach the mid thirties with humidex values into the mid forties
With a heat warning in effect for Hamilton today, it's going to be a hot Canada Day.
Environment Canada says daytime highs are forecast to reach the mid thirties with humidex values into the mid forties.
Extreme heat affects everyone says Environment Canada, but the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
The weather statement advises people to watch for symptoms of heat-related illness including swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
The Medical Officer of Health for the city of Hamilton is asking for the public to visit family, friends and neighbours, to make sure they are cool and drinking plenty of water.
The city and participating community agencies are responding to the heat by offering "cool places" to go during all stages of the heat event.
These locations can be identified by a "Cool Down Here" sign at the entrance.
As part of the city's response, all public, family, adult and seniors swims at all city of Hamilton indoor and outdoor pools will be free of charge.
More information on how to stay cool can be found on the city's website.
