Man charged with stunt driving after car clocked doing 201 km/h in Brantford: police
Service says car was travelling at an 'excessively high and dangerous rate of speed'
A 27-year-old man is facing charges after police say he was clocked driving 201 km/h in Brantford.
The car was stopped while officers were on the lookout for speeders on King George Road, between Powerline and Governors roads around 9:15 p.m. Sunday.
Police say that area has a speed limit of 80 k,/h, but as the vehicle approached they hear it accelerating northbound, coming from Powerline Road, where the speed limit is 50 km/h.
"The vehicle was then observed to be travelling at an excessively high and dangerous rate of speed," police stated in a media release.
Police said they used radar to determine the car was travelling at 201 km/h, more than double the 80 km/h limit.
The 27-year-old has been charged with stunt driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and speeding 201 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, according to police.
The vehicle was seized for 14 days and the driver's licence suspended for 30 days, the media release states.
It also provided some details on the recently increased penalties for stunt driving, which kicked in as of April 1.
Police said people convicted of stunt driving must now complete a driver improvement course within 60 days or their licence will be cancelled.
The maximum fine for stunt driving in Ontario is $10,000. A driver who's convicted could also face up to six months behind bars.
