Hamilton man charged with murder after home invasion, police seek 2 more suspects
Police say the motive is still unclear but money was involved
A 25-year-old Hamilton man is facing numerous charges including first-degree murder, police say, after a deadly home invasion and abduction last month.
Det. Sgt. Steve Bereziuk with the Hamilton Police Service told media on Friday afternoon detectives are still looking for two other suspects in the abduction of Hamilton man Faqir Ali. During the home invasion Ali's son, Hasnain, was shot and killed while his brother, who was also shot, is still recovering from his injuries.
"We're going to keep moving forward to hold the other two accountable," he said.
Police say they responded to reports of a shooting on Sept. 16 at roughly 3 a.m. in the Mount Hope area.
Relatives of the homeowners previously told CBC Hamilton people busted in wielding guns.
Bereziuk said the suspects and the accused were targeting Ali, but his sons tried to protect him.
They were both shot before Ali was thrown into a dark SUV and kidnapped.
His wife and daughter were in the home too, but weren't harmed.
When police arrived, they say Ali's sons, both in their 20s, had gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Motive still unclear, but money was demanded
Investigators say after Faqir was kidnapped, he was assaulted and eventually found near Beach Boulevard, some 25 kilometres from home.
"I don't think Beach Boulevard was the end location that they wanted to be at, I won't get into specifics as to why Beach Boulevard ended up being the area where Mr. Ali was ultimately found ... I don't think I'll get into anything further into their plan," Bereziuk said.
He said Ali and his son, whose name hasn't been released publicly, are "lucky to be alive."
Bereziuk said police are still investigating the motive behind the attack but said money was involved.
"The accused was looking for money from Mr. Ali. I won't say specifically how much money but a sum was obviously demanded for and no money has ever been obtained," he said.
"They didn't achieve their end goal, so that's very much a focus of our investigation."
Bereziuk said investigators were aware of an online post by a law firm in Mississauga about $12,000 owed by Ali in 2018 but there's no apparent link to the post and the attack.
He added there were no demands made by the kidnappers and the family was not known to Hamilton police.
Bereziuk said the accused was arrested on the 16th in the Mountain area around 11p.m., after using witnesses' information to find the vehicle. He said they found a handgun in the vehicle.
Now the man has been charged with the first-degree murder in the death of Hasnain Ali, 21, also known as Nano.
The Hamilton man is also facing attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and numerous firearms charges.
Antoine Chambers is in custody, police say, and will be in court on Oct. 13.
Bereziuk said he encourages the remaining suspects to contact a lawyer and turn themselves in.
