Ghost Lake water levels return to normal
The deal to lower water in TransAlta's reservoir ended Tuesday
Water levels are high once again at Ghost Lake reservoir after a temporary measure to protect Calgary against flooding expired.
The deal between TransAlta and the province ended Tuesday.
Water is finally reaching the shores of homes lining Ghost Lake. Just a few weeks ago, it was a much different picture for Andre Vryheid, who had a dry well and no view of the lake.
"We could walk half a kilometre before we came to actual water," he said.
Marina business hit
Ghost Lake Marina and campground owner Mike Weinert says while he's happy the water is back, his business has taken a hit.
"We definitely are down because we've lost about a month and a half of business that we normally would have and there's people on the dock that haven't renewed because their season has been shortened up considerably."
Weinert says so far he's lost about 40 per cent of people using his moorage, but hopes some will return now that boats can go in the water.
By keeping water levels low, the company said, about 65 million cubic meters of storage were available for flood mitigation. Ghost Lake reservoir is on the Bow River, about 45 kilometres west of Calgary.
