Police charge Calgary man with second-degree murder in East Village homicide
Badly injured man found on sidewalk early Tuesday morning later died in hospital
UPDATE: On Dec. 19, 2024, Raven Big Sorrel Horse was handed an eight-year sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter in June.
A Calgary man has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to a fatal assault in the city's southeast earlier this week, police say.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers were called to the 400 block of Sixth Avenue S.E., where a man was found by passersby in medical distress on the sidewalk, police said earlier this week.
The man was eventually taken to hospital, but he died from his injuries.
An autopsy by the office of the chief medical examiner identified the victim as David Kendall Williams, 27. The manner of death was ruled a homicide, but police are not releasing the cause of death.
The death is Calgary's 23rd homicide this year and the second in three days.
A security camera image of the victim and a person of interest in the homicide was released Wednesday as investigators worked to gather evidence.
On Saturday, police said Raven Big Sorrel Horse, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder and will appear in court Nov. 3.
