Emergency crews are on scene at the Bow River near the Peace Bridge following the discovery of a body in the water.

The body was found just before 2 p.m. by a passerby 110 metres west of the bridge.

Jordan Meloche says he was walking in Prince's Island Park looking for a spot for a picnic.

"I just happened to look in the river and what looked like kind of a log ended up being, sadly, a person," Meloche said.

He called 911 and flagged down the fire department's water rescue crews.

It's not yet known how long it had been in the river or if the death is being considered suspicious.

Police say a medical examiner is working to determine if foul play is a factor.
