A man and a woman are facing arson charges related to an explosion and fire at a townhouse complex in the northeast Calgary community of Monterey Park.

Police were called to Las Americas Villas N.E. at about 11 p.m. on Oct. 5, 2024, for a fire believed to have been started by an explosion that came from inside one of the residences.

The Calgary Fire Department previously said three townhomes were destroyed in the blaze while EMS told CBC News at the time that six people were hurt, three of them critically.

Police believe a man and a woman intentionally set a fire within their home using an accelerant, which caused the explosion.

A 40-year-old man from Calgary, who was previously charged with one count of arson (disregard for human life), has now been charged with another arson count (damage to property of others) and possession of incendiary material, investigators say.

Police said a 43-year-old Calgary woman is facing the same charges.

Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to contact police.
