Alleged cancer scam artist recovering from jail assault

A Calgary man who is accused of faking brain cancer to raise money is recovering in a Calgary hospital from a jailhouse beating. 

Kristopher Cook is being held in the Calgary Remand Centre on two counts of fraud. 

Cook’s lawyer, Joel Chevrefils said his client was attacked by other prisoners shortly after arriving at the remand centre earlier this week. 

"All we know is that his door to his cell opened and a bunch of people charged in and assaulted him. He doesn’t know who they are. Again we can guess what their motivations are but we don’t know at this point," said Chevrefils on Friday. 

According to Chevrefils his client received a concussion, a broken nose, black eyes and a bruised spleen. 

Cook’s bail hearing has been postponed because of the assault. 

Cheverfils is trying to have Cook held in protective custody when his client is sent back to the remand centre.
