Criminal charges have been laid and new details released about a Boxing Day multi-vehicle collision in south Calgary that took the life of a child.

Police responded to a drug store robbery in the southwest community of Millrise around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The suspect sped away in a stolen 2015 Dodge Caravan, heading northbound on Macleod Trail, driving dangerously, police said.

The minivan didn't stop at a red light at Southland Drive, striking two westbound vehicles: a 2009 Pontiac Vibe and a 2014 Toyota 4Runner.

A woman and her two daughters in the Vibe were taken to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition. One of those daughters, a nine-year-old, died in hospital Thursday afternoon.

According to Zara Wishloff who started a GoFundMe campaign, the woman on the right is Amanda Reitmeier with her two daughters. Victoria, 9, centre-right, died Thursday afternoon after a driver went through a red light at Southland Drive and Macleod Tr. S., earlier in the day.

Police said the Vibe struck a 2023 Ford Explorer as a result of the initial impact. The Explorer then struck a fifth vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox.

"We share the deep sadness felt by the family and loved ones who have had their lives forever changed by someone's disregard for public safety," Acting Insp. Andy Woodward said in a Friday statement.

Duane Arlen John Nepoose, 30, is facing charges including robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, flight from a police officer, dangerous driving, dangerous driving causing death, operating a vehicle without a licence, operating a vehicle without registration, operating a vehicle without insurance and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Speed and impairment are being looked at as contributing factors, police said.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was called to investigate the initial interaction between the suspect and police, but after reviewing the facts, the watchdog determined that interaction did not contribute to the collision and therefore ASIRT won't be investigating further.
