A man is in custody after allegedly barricading himself in a house with a gun for several hours Friday afternoon, North Vancouver RCMP say.

Lynn Valley Road between Highway 1 and Williams Avenue was closed for much of Friday afternoon as North Vancouver RCMP negotiated with the man, who had barricaded himself inside a basement suite.

Police were initially called around 1:30 p.m. by a resident concerned about a man in their basement suite who had a handgun, Sgt. Peter DeVries said.

"We've asked a few people to leave ... neighbouring homes just for their safety," he said Friday afternoon.

A crisis negotiator was called to the scene and, just after 6 p.m., RCMP tweeted the incident was over.
