City of Cranbrook under boil water advisory until at least Monday
City says residents should bring water to a rolling boil for at least a minute before using
UPDATE, Jan. 18 — Cranbrook, B.C., lifts boil water advisory after 2 days
The City of Cranbrook is under a boil water advisory for at least the next four days.
A notice from the city on Thursday asks all residents who are on the city's water system to bring all water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking, washing or brushing their teeth.
The city says the issue stems from work staff did Wednesday night while performing scheduled maintenance and replacing equipment at the Phillips Reservoir.
"During the work, there were [two] brief occurrences of over chlorinating followed by not chlorinating the city's water system," it said in a statement.
"Staff were able to quickly correct the disinfection issues and had the disinfection system back to normal operating within 20 minutes."
The city says the boil water notice is issued out of an abundance of caution, and the city will be taking water samples for testing to ensure the system is free of bacteria before lifting the advisory.
It says businesses, including restaurants, long-term care homes or child-care facilities, should visit the Interior Health Authority website for information on operating during a boil water advisory.
Cranbrook, located in B.C.'s Southern Interior, has a population of 20,499, according to the 2021 census.
CBC News has contacted the city for further information.
