Police say two bodies were found inside a vehicle that was allegedly set on fire in a regional park in Abbotsford, B.C., last week.

They say officers and firefighters responded to a burning red Mitsubishi Outlander on Jan. 3 in Sumas Mountain Regional Park. When the flames were put out, they discovered what appeared to be human remains.

Police didn't initially say how many people had been killed in the fire, but on Wednesday the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced the remains belonged to two individuals.

IHIT says investigators are still reviewing the circumstances around the deaths, but they do not believe the fire was a random event.

There appears to be no ongoing risk to the public, IHIT's Sgt. Freda Fong said in a statement.

The homicide team says it has been working with the Abbotsford Police Department and the B.C. Coroners Service on the case.

Fong told CBC News that police know who owns the SUV, and are working on establishing a timeline of events leading up to the fire.

"With arson scenes, they tend to be complex depending on what's remaining," she said. "And so it does take some time to determine cause, as well as the identities of the individuals."

IHIT says the RCMP tactical troop also helped conduct a thorough search of the park for evidence.
