Halifax Regional Police say a six-year-old child is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being stabbed multiple times in downtown Halifax.

In a release on Sunday evening, police say&nbsp;the child was found suffering from "multiple stab wounds"&nbsp;at around 1:20 p.m. in the 1900 block of Barrington Street. The child was taken by ambulance to the IWK Health Centre.

A 19-year-old woman, not believed to be known to the child, was arrested at the scene for aggravated assault.&nbsp;

Police are asking anyone who may have video taken near the time of the incident to contact them directly.

On Sunday evening, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston expressed his condolences on X.

"I struggle to fully express my outrage and sadness at learning about this attack on an innocent child in Halifax," he said.
