Where Do Your Feelings Live? is a children's book about love, compassion and caring for others. Featuring art by Quebec illustrator and co-creator Myriam Chery, young readers are encouraged to show compassion to themselves, their families and their communities, and to imagine where inside themselves they keep their feelings.
"I created the book shortly after the beginning of the pandemic. I began doing these short circle times on my Facebook page for kids to watch while in lockdown. We would read a book, sing songs — and most importantly I would check in to see how they were feeling. Kids loved it. I received drawn pictures, photos and letters from children watching," Hernandez told CBC Books(external link).
"Most of the time, I would have to hold back tears thinking of the many lives lost each day and the conflict arising around the world. One day was particularly challenging for me and I wanted to show the children how one can visualize their feelings as a sweet animal living somewhere on their body. I had them all imagine giving that feeling a cuddle and telling it that it had every right to be the feeling they are," she added.
"With the help of Myriam Chery's tender illustrations, children are given the chance to visualize where their feeling lives in their body. Imagining these emotions as a vulnerable animal in need of care, they nurture them into a place of safety and belonging."
Where Do Your Feelings Live? is a picture book for ages 4-7 and will be published on May 17, 2022.
