The 16-team field for Canada's Olympic mixed doubles trials was confirmed Wednesday by Curling Canada.

The Dec. 28-Jan. 2 competition at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie, Man., will determine Canada's mixed doubles entry at the Beijing Games in February.

Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris won gold when the discipline made its Olympic debut at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. Morris returns with Rachel Homan as his partner for this edition of the trials.

Lawes cannot participate as she is competing with Team Jennifer Jones in the women's team competition in Beijing.

St-Georges, Asselin, Carey, Hodgson book final spots at Canadian mixed doubles Olympic curling trials

Laurie St-Georges and Felix Asselin defeated Chelsea Carey and Colin Hodgson 6-5 in the Brantford Mixed Doubles Curling Classic final on Sunday in Brantford, Ont.

Both teams had reason to celebrate, having qualified for the 2022 Canad Inns Mixed Doubles Trials that will take place in Portage la Prairie, Man., from Dec. 28, 2021, to Jan. 2, 2022.

Curling bubble helped put sport back on track after being iced by pandemic

Veteran skip Brad Gushue admits he had a love-hate relationship with curling over the last year. The sport essentially shut down for most of 2020 due to the pandemic. It returned last winter with a most unusual setup: a seven-event curling bubble in Calgary.

Other notable duos include Lisa Weagle and John Epping, Chelsea Carey and Colin Hodgson, and Val Sweeting and Marc Kennedy.

Weagle is also on Team Jennifer Jones but is listed as an alternate on the Olympic roster and can therefore compete in the mixed doubles trials.

Round robin play will conclude Dec. 31 and the playoffs will start in the late afternoon that day.
