Additional COVID-19 cases reported at Hamilton schools

Highview elementary says no link between 3 cases, so no outbreak has been declared
A third case of COVID-19 has been confirmed at Highview Elementary School and a fifth at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School.
The positive test result for the latest case connected to Hamilton's public school board came back on Saturday.
A letter from Highview principal Jamie McLean states that the student was last in the building on Oct. 20.
"Although this is the third case related to our school, public health has determined there is no epidemiological link between the cases, and therefore no outbreak will be declared," it reads.
St. Mary has seen a handful of cases over the course of the pandemic, with news of its most recent positive result being shared Thursday.
The student was last in the school on Oct. 13, wrote principal Brian Daly in a letter to families.
"Public Health Officials have indicated that there are no school-related close contacts with this individual," he added.

Two classrooms at the high school were closed as of Friday, according to the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board's reporting page.
Mohawk College
Mohawk is reporting a new case of COVID-19 at its Fennell Avenue Campus.
The college says the student in question was last on campus on Oct. 19.
They were not experiencing any symptoms of the virus at the time, adds a media release.
"All mask-wearing and distancing procedures were followed while on campus," it reads. "The student later experienced symptoms, followed the appropriate steps and tested positive for COVID-19."
Mohawk says the school and the student have been working with public health officials and that they've indicated there are no college-related close contacts and "therefore no risk to the college."
The release says some people may have had "casual contact with the affected student," and are being asked to self-monitor for symptoms for the next 14 days.
