5-screen theatre includes recliners, food and drink service and licensed lounge
Calgary is getting a standalone, full-service, adults-only movie theatre.
The Cineplex VIP cinema is slated to open in the University District in the city's northwest and will include five theatres with recliner chairs and food and beverage service, as well as a licensed lounge.
It will be the second such theatre in Canada and is scheduled to open in 2021.
"VIP Cinemas is movie-going made for adults and our new theatre will be the perfect destination for Calgarians to socialize with friends and relax in a luxurious and refined setting designed just for them," said Cineplex president and CEO Ellis Jacob.
James Robertson, the president and CEO of West Campus Development Trust, which is constructing the new University District neighourhood, said they're excited for the cinema.
"Once complete, the new theatre will be a short walk from many of our community's residences and easily accessible by transit or bike," he said in a news release.
The Cineplex theatre will be just up the road from another "luxury" movie experience in Market Mall, scheduled to open in 2019.
That theatre, operated by Landmark Cinemas, will also feature five auditoriums with recliner seats.
Cineplex says its first adults-only VIP theatre complex in Canada is in Don Mills in Toronto.
Other Cineplex operations across the country have VIP theatres — but only as part of larger complexes that also include regular, all-ages theatres.
In Calgary, Cineplex opened its first VIP cinema earlier this year in Seton but that complex includes regular cinemas as well.
