Two men are under arrest in Montreal for a murder Saturday in southeast Calgary.
Mourad Gasmi, 21, and Shannoh Jabet, 22, both of Calgary, have been arrested on warrants for the second-degree murder of Mvemba Eriq Alfonso.
Alfonso, who also went by the last name Mvemba, was shot to death early Saturday morning in the southeast community of Dover. He was 23.
On Saturday, around 3:30 a.m., Calgary police responded to a call to an apartment in the 3400 block of 31A Avenue S.E. There, they discovered a deceased man in his twenties. He had been shot to death.
"In this particular instance … we believe this to be what we classify as a 'drug rip,' where somebody attended another residence, or what have you, to try to steal or take [street] drugs that don't belong to them," said acting Insp. Paul Wozney in a news conference Wednesday.
Wozney said police believe the victim and the two accused were known to each other.
Arrested in Montreal
During their investigation, police discovered that a black Dodge truck had been spotted fleeing the scene. It was identified and reported stolen the following day.
On Tuesday in Montreal, the Surete du Quebec informed Calgary police they had pulled over the same Dodge. Two men were detained and subsequently arrested for second-degree murder.
The men will be transported back to Calgary. A court date has not been set.
Jabet known to police
Shannoh Jabet, one of the two suspects arrested in Montreal, is known to police — he was previously convicted of manslaughter in the beating death of an acquaintance in 2014.
Jabet and another man were charged in the death of Ayuen Ajak Goot, who was beaten in a Radisson Heights strip mall parking lot on July 5, 2014. The 18-year-old, died 10 days later in hospital.
The beating was reportedly the result of a "beef" the acquaintances had and started after a night of drinking.
Jabet was charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. He was sentenced to time served.
