WASHINGTON, D.C.—In celebration of Mother's Day weekend, President Trump surprised wife Melania with a "You're Welcome" card. The card, which was couriered "at great expense" from the White House to the First Lady's residence in Manhattan, came enclosed with a photo of the president signed "No need to thank me" and underneath, "Donald J. Trump".
Trump tweeted an image of himself signing the card along with a message apparently intended to honour the First Lady and mothers across the country.
"Happy Mother's Day to all the other great, great moms out there," wrote the president. "Especially Melania, who I know gets great joy from being a mother, and I'm happy to be fully responsible for that joy."
"I think we can all agree that mothers are great, because of the important role they serve giving birth to our babies, honouring their husbands, and, I assume, doing other great stuff too," Trump concluded before firing off several tweets about CNN's "failing ratings".

The president's statements have already been met with controversy from his political opponents, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

"I'm not surprised to see the president claim to respect our nation's mothers while actively and hypocritically tearing down efforts toward their maternity leave, equal pay, and access to healthcare," said Schumer in a written statement.

"What is more surprising is how little he tried to even pretend to care," he continued. "I'm starting to wonder whether he has a mental block that prevents him considering even the theoretical concept of motherhood."
President Trump was quick to respond to his detractors, tweeting, "All the haters and losers saying I don't like moms are FAKE NEWS. If I dislike them so much, how come I knocked up so many?"
The president went on to share several photos of Senator Schumer's wife Iris Weinshall with the comment "Yikes!"
In a statement delivered through a White House spokesperson, Melania thanked her husband for his "thoughtful card" and remarked she "hopes to see him sometime in the future".
