WASHINGTON, D.C.—In an uncharacteristic and unprecedented last-minute addition, filmmaker David Lynch was added to the list of Oscar nominees at this month's ceremony for his role in the deranged, bizarre, and downright Lynchian press conference put on by President Donald Trump yesterday.

"The script's dark, sordid themes and the accompanying disorienting direction were triumphs, but the truest, creepiest achievement may have been in the Trump character," said Richard Roeper in a review published in the Chicago Sun-Times. "He really improved it—and I mean that in the loosest sense of the word. The character has never inspired such awe, in the way he will override the suggestions, corrections, and pleas of reporters, the suffering people of the nation—I mean what is this? What's going on? What am I seeing? That's what I was asking throughout the entire press conference, and that's when you know that Lynch is operating on all cylinders."
"We realize this is a bold move, but we had to make an exception for this year's ceremony, said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. "What stunning thing to witness. There were times when you weren't sure if the character had been replaced by a similar-looking actor for a moment. Because he looks mostly the same, but he's… he's saying different things than he said a minute ago. Facts he acknowledged just yesterday, or that the whole world acknowledges to be true, he's denying! As if he doesn't care! No other director could manage such contradictions so handily."
"I don't really like to describe my work," said Lynch. "It can't be explained in words. It can only be described by the feeling you get when you witness it. And you saw it: fear, nausea, and a sense that things aren't quite right. Millions of people felt that yesterday, and I think that's why the members of the Academy think I captured the Trump aesthetic so well. Anyway, I have to go ride my tractor now."
At press time, Trump was demanding to know why he had not been nominated for every other Oscar category, including best sound editing and of course best make-up.
