NELSON, B.C.—At first glance, this morning had the makings of a family reunion, but with a more sombre tone. Cars packed with family members showed up at an alarming rate. They had only one hour to prepare before Aunt Clara showed up. Unbeknownst to her, an emergency intervention was imminent.
A year ago, Clara signed up for Twitter. Her family members say they've been paying for it ever since. After stumbling on a #blessed thread, Clara began gradually integrating the term into her everyday speech offline.
"It didn't seem like a problem at first. She would say it and we would laugh, but then the laughing turned to tears," recalls Clara's brother Darryl Simmons. "Then the clothes started. T-shirts. Trucker hats. She ran out of money so she sold my TV to buy a "Sorry, Not Sorry" belt buckle. One day I found her in a gutter muttering, "stay woke" over and over.
Benjamin Sparks, an intervention specialist, was on hand to oversee the mediation. "I see this sort of thing all the time. It breaks my heart. I watched the phrase "awesome sauce" tear families apart. This is bad, but not as bad as the "YOLO" years. With help from family and friends, Clara can turn her life around."
After four days of intense badgering Clara gave in and decided it would be best if she got professional help. Before Sparks led her to a waiting car she had heartfelt words for her family: "Y'all literally swagged on me hard, but imma take it like a boss and get some next level treatment. No homo."
It is sure to be a long journey but she is recovering. If your aunt or anyone you know is trying hard to be young and hip, it's time to tell someone. A 24-hour hotline has been set up at 1-800-JUS-STOP (1-800-587-7867) and operators are standing by.
