KELOWNA, B.C.—Climate change is a mondo bummer, man. Just ask Barry Forsberg, 37, owner of Frosty Peaks Ski Resort outside of Kelowna, B.C.
"This season has started off pretty slow," Forsberg admits. "We haven't had much snow. No snow, things go slow. Green peak, not a busy week. No snow on the hill, not chill. You get the idea."
With the green hills a constant and mocking reminder of the money flying out the window, Forsberg has been forced to adjust his marketing strategy.
"What people unfortunately don't seem to realize is there are tons of fun things to do here other than ski."
We ask Forsberg what he is referring to specifically. There is an uncomfortably long pause.
"Well, first of all, you can still use the hill. You can walk up it. Walk down it. Walk around it. That's some quality exercise."
Forsberg encourages clientele to use their imagination while visiting Frosty Peaks.
"Is a ski just a ski?" Forsberg asks, grabbing one off the wall and waving it through the air. "Or is it a sword? A wizard's staff? A machine gun?"
Forsberg finishes his point with some reasonably convincing machine gun sound effects.
In addition to encouraging people to use equipment worth hundreds of dollars as props for some shoddy theatre, Forsberg reminds us of some of the resort's oft-forgotten features.
"It's not just about the skiing. We have so much more here! We have coffee... places to sit and drink the coffee... key chains... and MUGS! You can buy a mug, bring it to the cafe and we'll fill it with coffee. Then you can Instagram the mug, as long as you are connected to our WiFi, which is a modest $27 per day."
"It really is worth the six hour drive!"
