MAMMA MIA!, NFLD—Residents of the sleepy little village of Mamma Mia!, Newfoundland, have witnessed the recent turmoil experienced by the city of Hamilton since the surprise smash success of Hamilton, the musical. Social media users have been frequently directing tweets at the wrong entity, particularly this the past weekend after Vice President–Elect Mike Pence attended the show. They have seen all these things. And they're nervous.
"I'm sure it's a fine show. But if the cast members of Mamma Mia! were ever to find themselves in a spot of controversy," says Lynne Woodward, a long-time resident of Mamma Mia!, "that might reflect badly on us."
- I'm furious that Hamilton is not about Hamilton, Ontario
- Trump Hollywood star destroyed, Mike Pence honorary sad mummified gerbil still intact
The mayor of Mamma Mia!, Clive Miller, also spoke out. "It's an interesting conundrum in which we find ourselves, given that we obviously had the name first. I take no issue with the musical using our name—nor with the band ABBA, whose tunes I actually must say I enjoyed quite a bit as a teen back in the '70s. But since Twitter started up, whenever I check my social media for mentions of our little town, I end up quite confused. What do you mean we 'broke all box-office records'?? And then of course I think about it for a moment and I understand."
At press time, there had been no similar statements of concern issued on behalf of Jesus Christ Superstar, Manitoba, nor from The Producers, Ontario or Shrek: The Musical, Yukon.
