Holland College students once again have the opportunity to win a car or cash awards this year — and all they have to do is be the best they can be.
Full-time post-secondary students in their first or second year of study at Holland College are eligible to win a car — this year a 2016 Nissan Micra — or one of four awards of $1,000.
Candidates will be nominated by college staff and faculty on the basis of merit, character and academic achievement. The top five nominees will be interviewed by a selection panel in the spring of 2017.

Former Islander Lou MacEachern said he started the initiative as a way to motivate students to work to their full potential and, with the last two years' challenges being so successful, he wanted to provide the same opportunity to this year's students.
"This has never been about rewarding the top academic student," said MacEachern in a news release.
"This is about motivating every student to get to work and achieve their best."

MacEachern grew up in Hazel Grove, P.E.I., and left school at a young age to help on the family farm.
He returned to Queen Charlotte School in 1956 as a mature student, before attending Prince of Wales College and Dalhousie University.
This is the third year MacEachern has backed the car giveaway initiative for students.
