Calgary's culinary community is mourning the loss of a prominent local chef who died in a highway collision northeast of Calgary.
Jonathan Sobol, 33, was killed Tuesday morning when the sedan he was driving collided head-on with a cube van at Highway 9 and Township Road 270, about 10 kilometres south of Irricana.
Sobol's passenger, who has not been identified publicly, also died at the scene.
A tractor-trailer unit was also involved in the collision.
A man in his 20s, who was in the cube van, was taken to the Foothills hospital in Calgary with minor injuries.
Sobol was executive chef at Starbelly in the southeast community of Seton, which put a condolences note on its Facebook page.
"Jonathan was deeply committed to his community using his many talents to educate and support children and youth," the post said.
"His tireless work with the Alberta Children's Hospital, South Health Campus, and Haysboro School touched many lives. He was an advocate for supporting local farmers and producers, a passion that could be found both in and out of the kitchen."
There were also several tributes to Sobol on Twitter.
