A popular look-off spot and picnic area for cyclists and hikers in P.E.I. National Park is temporarily closed while changes are being made.

The project is part of $3 billion in upgrades over five years to Parks Canada facilities across Canada, including $23 million in P.E.I., representing "the largest federal infrastructure plan in the history of Parks Canada," officials told CBC News in an email Tuesday. 

The washroom facilities at Cape Turner, along the Gulf Shore Way trail, are being upgraded, and that part of the work is expected to be done by the end of next week. 

"Work is being done to rehabilitate the facilities there, as part of the overall infrastructure investment happening in P.E.I. National Park over the next five years," the statement said.  

The kitchen shelter and circular drives have been removed from the site because they were aging and under-used, officials added. 

"Parks Canada is investing in visitor infrastructure — such as trails, visitor centres and campgrounds, as well as highways, parkways and bridges — to ensure the quality and reliability of visitor facilities and to continue to allow Canadians to connect with nature," the statement continued. 

Picnic tables will be added to the site once the work is complete.
