Brooks RCMP have announced the discovery of human remains, 10 months after second-degree murder warrants were issued in connection with a missing person in the area.
Police have not said the two cases are connected. A cattle farmer found the remains in his field west of Brooks last Thursday.
The medical examiner and forensic pathologist determined the remains to be human after an autopsy on Monday, but RCMP said more testing is needed to learn about the identity of the person.
Mohamed Jama Abdi, 44, from Brooks was last seen July 14, 2015, and was reported missing 10 days later. His body was never found.
A month later, police announced they were treating Abdi's disappearance as a homicide and issued Canada-wide warrants for Ali Abdullahi Awale, 40, for second-degree murder.
RCMP believe Awale left Brooks on a bus on July 16, 2015, and then boarded a plane that left Toronto on July 23 en route to Somalia.
At the time, police asked the public for help piecing together Awale and Abdi's activities leading up to the disappearance. Investigators also issued a plea asking for information on where Abdi's body may be.
The Brooks RCMP is working with the major crimes unit based out of Calgary and its forensic identification unit.
