El-Ajami, who was known to police, was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators think it was a targeted attack linked to an ongoing dispute between gangs involved in the drug trade, said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus.
"I think we're concerned that there may be more violence," he said. "In this case there were over 60 people in the immediate area of the shooting."
It's believed the killer was driven away by someone in a silver SUV.
The shooter is a believed to an Arabic man in his 20s with a heavy build.
"Both the man and SUV remain outstanding," said Andrus.
The killing was Calgary's 29th homicide in 2015.
