A 20-year-old Calgary man is facing several charges after a fatal hit and run following a gas theft in the city's northwest Sunday.
Maryam Rashidi, 35, died Tuesday in hospital after being run over by a stolen truck.
The gas station attendant chased the vehicle out of the parking lot after it filled up $113 of fuel and drove off without paying.
Police recovered the stolen truck on Monday night in the community of Varsity. Tips from the public then led police to a home in Beddington on Tuesday night where the two suspects were located.
A 16-year-old male was taken into custody, but was later released after police consultation with the Crown's office. Police believe he was the passenger in the truck at the time of Sunday's hit and run.
Police took the 20-year-old into custody after officers surrounded the home for hours. The plan is to charge him with several offences once he appears before a Justice of the Peace:
  • Criminal negligence causing death
  • Hit and run causing death
  • Dangerous driving causing death
  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Theft
Police say further charges may be laid, and they expect to release his name after his court appearance.
"The Calgary Police Service would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance," said police in a release.
