A York Regional Police officer has been charged with dangerous driving causing death in connection with a fatal collision that occurred in Toronto this past February.

On Feb. 12, 2014, Natasha Abogado was crossing St. Clair Avenue East, when she was struck by an unmarked police vehicle, which was being driven by an on-duty police officer.

The 18-year-old Abogado died at the scene.

A subsequent investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has found that a charge should be laid against Const. Remo Romano.

"This is a terrible tragedy that has had a devastating effect on all those involved," said York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe.

Romano will remain with the force, on administrative duties. He has been a York Regional Police officer since 2003.

The accused is due to appear in a Toronto court on July 24.

The SIU investigates all incidents involving police in which serious injury or death occur, or when allegations of sexual assault are raised.
