Woman struck, killed by unmarked York Regional Police vehicle on Wednesday
The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a young woman was struck and killed by an unmarked police vehicle on Wednesday.
An on-duty York Region police officer was behind the wheel when the vehicle struck the 18-year-old woman near Warden Road and St. Clair Avenue East. She was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.
The cause of the incident is under investigation. But residents say jaywalking is common in the area as people come and go from nearby Providence Health Centre.
"They need to put lights up here. People from Providence — they all park on the street here and then everybody crosses," one neighbour told CBC News.
The SIU is looking for witnesses, including anyone on a TTC bus who may have seen the incident, which occured shortly after 8 p.m.
The SIU investigates whenever police are involved in a serious injury or death.
