Mitchell Harkes denied bail in deadly house party stabbing case

U of C student Brett Wiese died after strangers showed up at a Brentwood-area party in 2013
Bail has been denied for a man accused in the fatal stabbing of a University of Calgary student at a house party in January 2013.
Brett Wiese, 20, died of his injuries last year after a number of strangers appeared at a house party in Brentwood. It's alleged Wiese asked the strangers to leave but the group returned with more people — and knives — looking for a fight.

Mitchell Harkes, 20, was charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault in connection to Weise's death. His lawyer says the judge should have granted him bail.
"With conditions that the judge could have imposed — strict conditions such as house arrest and high cash bail, those types of things, and monitoring by police or authorities — would have been sufficient to ensure that his behaviour in the future was going to be lawful and so that no one would be in jeopardy with having him out," said Balfour Der.
Another person was seriously injured in the fight.
A 17-year-old girl was initially charged with second-degree murder in the case, but that charge was upgraded to first-degree murder last summer.
