The 63rd season of the world's longest-running science TV program premieres January 4. Watch The Nature of Things on CBC and CBC Gem

On January 4, 2024, The Nature of Things begins its 63rd year on the air, and loyal fans will notice a difference this season: two new hosts.

Sarika Cullis-Suzuki, a marine biologist and passionate environmentalist, and Anthony Morgan, a molecular scientist committed to helping communities through science, take on hosting the show following David Suzuki's retirement in 2023.

Cullis-Suzuki and Morgan both believe that science is the most powerful tool humanity has at its disposal, and are thrilled to be sharing new and exciting stories about health, technology, the environment and ancient wonders.

"Just to be part of this legacy — on a personal level because of [my father], but then also because I really believe in the show and the substance — feels amazing," said Cullis-Suzuki, David Suzuki's daughter. "It is such an honour. I feel so humbled."

"I grew up watching [this] show," Morgan said. "I remember watching it and thinking, 'Oh my God, that would be the coolest job in the world.' And now I get to do it. Like, I still can't believe it. I still can't believe it."

Since its launch in 1960, the Nature of Things has brought viewers six decades of discovery and the upcoming season is no different. Morgan and Cullis-Suzuki investigate some incredible stories and discoveries, including:

  • An instruction manual for the human voice

  • How whales evolved from land-based, air-breathing mammals into the giants of the sea

  • Butts! (seriously, we have a show about butts this season)

  • The great white sharks swimming around Canada's East Coast

  • Why breakups really do hurt — the science of heartbreak

  • A three-part series on the secret ways animals use sound to survive

  • The real Jurassic park — Amazing dinosaur discoveries from the Jurassic

  • No bad hair days — the incredible abilities and structure of our hair

  • Comedian Mae Martin takes a look at non-binary nature

Tune in to The Nature of Things Thursdays at 9pm, starting January 4, 2024. Streaming for free anytime on CBC Gem.
