Wimbledon: Djokovic down 2 sets as rain postpones match
Williams sisters advance, Wawrinka ousted on Friday
Novak Djokovic is in trouble at Wimbledon, losing the first two sets to Sam Querrey.
The three-time champion is trailing 7-6 (6), 6-1 to the American in the third-round match. After the second set, play was suspended because of rain.
The All England Club said there will be no more play Friday on the outside courts at Wimbledon.
Play on Centre Court, where Roger Federer defeated Daniel Evans, continued under the roof.
Djokovic, a two-time defending champion at the All England Club, has won four straight major titles and is halfway to a calendar-year Grand Slam.
Sunday tennis scheduled
Wimbledon will schedule matches on the middle Sunday for the 4th time in 139 years.
The decision was made Friday, the third day of significant rain delays during Week 1 at the Grand Slam event.
Traditionally, the tournament takes the middle Sunday off. But wet weather has created a backlog of matches, including second-rounders that still have not been completed.
The only other years the Sunday was added to the schedule were 1991, 1997 and 2004.
The schedule at Wimbledon has been pushed back after several days of rain this year, and Friday's weather only made things worse. There are still players who are waiting to finish their second-round matches. Normally, Friday and Saturday are for third-round matches.
Williams sisters advance
Serena Williams rebounded after losing the first set and went on to reach the third round at Wimbledon by beating Christina McHale 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-4.
The match started with the roof open, but the rain returned to the All England Club and play was briefly delayed as the retractable roof was closed.
Thee six-time Wimbledon champion, lost a set for the first time at this year's tournament. She will next face Annika Beck of Germany in the third round.
On Court No. 1, her sister Venus Williams made it through the rain and into the fourth round at Wimbledon.
The five-time champion beat Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 in a match delayed four times by rain, including once when Williams had match point at 7-6 in the third set.
When they resumed, Kasatkina held serve to 7-7. But the match lasted only 16 more minutes as Williams finally broke her opponents serve again to win.
Wawrinka ousted by del Potro
Juan Martin del Potro, playing at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in more than two years, knocked fourth-seeded Stan Wawrinka out of Wimbledon.
The 2009 U.S. Open champion beat Wawrinka, a two-time major champion, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the second round under the roof on Centre Court.
The meeting was the first match between two former Grand Slam champions in the second round at Wimbledon since Marat Safin beat Novak Djokovic in 2008.
Wawrinka has won both the French Open and Australian Open, and reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon the last two years. Del Porto reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2013.
Milos's match postponed
Milos Raonic will get Canada Day off after all.
The No. 6-seeded Canadian was due to face American Jack Sock on Court No. 1 Friday. However, the match was postponed due to rain.
Raonic, who has yet to drop a set at Wimbledon, has won seven straight matches against No. 27 Sock, including a third-round victory at the Miami Open earlier this year.
