Raonic, Marino crack Top 100 in pro tennis rankings

Canadian Milos Raonic, one of the major stories of the Australian Open, has rocketed 58 places to No. 94 in the ATP rankings released Monday.

The 20-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., made it to the fourth round in Melbourne before losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 to seventh-seeded David Ferrer of Spain.

The six-foot-five Canadian with the booming serve downed Bjorn Phau in the first round, surprised No. 22 Michael Llodra in the second round and stunned No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny in the third round.

The Top 5 remained the same in the rankings with Rafael Nadal at No. 1, followed by Roger Federer, Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic, Robin Soderling, and Aussie runner-up Andy Murray.

Ferrer improved one spot to No. 6.

Marino jumps to No. 84

Vancouver's Rebecca Marino, meantime, cracked the WTA's Top 100, jumping 20 places to No. 84.

And for the first time, the Top 10 players in the women's tennis rankings represent 10 different countries.

Eleven different nations are represented among the Top 11 and 30 different countries among the Top 60 in Monday's rankings.

"Having 10 different players represent the top 10 rankings shows how truly global tennis has become," WTA Chair and CEO Stacey Allaster said.

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki remained No. 1, followed by Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium, Russia's Vera Zvonareva, Italy's Francesca Schiavone and Australia's Sam Stosur.

The next five: Venus Williams of the United States; China's Li Na; Jelena Jankovic of Serbia; Victoria Azarenka of Belarus; and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska.

Shahar Peer moved to a career high of No. 11, a record for a player from Israel.

Schiavone is the first Italian to break into the top five.

Australian Open runner-up Li is the first Chinese player to reach No. 7.

Former top-ranked player Serena Williams, who has been out with a foot injury since winning Wimbledon last year, dropped from No. 4 to No. 12.
