Bouchard, Raonic bounced from Madrid Open quarters
Both Canadians eliminated in straight-set defeats
Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic lost their respective quarter-final matches Thursday at the Madrid Open.
Bouchard, who caused a stir earlier in the week with a dramatic defeat of Maria Sharapova, was beaten in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 by Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Raonic struggled out of the gate in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Belgian David Goffin, falling behind a break in the first game of the first set.
The Thornhill, Ont., native started out better in the second set as he fired in two aces in the first game. However, Raonic also suffered a break in that final set, from which he couldn't recover.
It was the fourth tour-level match between Raonic and Goffin, and each player has now prevailed in two. The tournament also represented Raonic's second appearance back from a hamstring injury. He reached the Istanbul Open finals last week before losing to Marin Cilic.
Next up for Goffin is a date with the Rafael Nadal after he beat Australian Nick Kyrgios in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Novak Djokovic also advanced past Feliciano Lopez in a tight match, 6-4, 7-5.
The biggest surprise of the day came when No. 1 seed Andy Murray fell to Croatian Borna Coric 6-3, 6-3.
