Raonic has hip surgery, may miss Montreal
Milos Raonic is expected to make a full recovery following successful hip surgery in Colorado earlier this week.
The tennis phenom sustained an injury June 23 after falling uncomfortably during his second-round contest on the grass at Wimbledon.
Tennis Canada officials say Raonic is expected to be back to form in six weeks, though that projection seems to put him out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal scheduled for the week of Aug. 8. Raonic is already riding the stationary bike, officials say.
Perhaps the only thing faster than the young Canadian’s serve has been his speedy rise in the world rankings, moving from 94 to 26 in only seven months this season.
The Thornhill native began his ascent in qualifying for the Australian Open, and by beating No. 10 seed Mikhail Youzhny in four sets to become the first qualifier since 1999 to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam contest.
Soon after, Raonic grabbed the first ATP title of his career by winning the SAP Open in San Jose, beating Fernando Verdasco and finishing the tournament with 58 aces in four matches. At 20 years old, Raonic stands as the first Canadian in 16 years to hold an ATP title.
