Milos Raonic, Vasek Pospisil eliminated in Cincinnati
Raonic out in 1st round, Pospisil 2nd
Canadians Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil were eliminated Tuesday at the Western & Southern Open.
Raonic, seeded ninth at the tournament, was defeated 7-6 (4), 6-4 by Spain's Feliciano Lopez in his first match.
Lopez broke Raonic just once in the match, but that was all the Spaniard needed as he saved the only break point he faced.
Both players scored off their serves, with Raonic scoring 15 aces to Lopez's 12.
Raonic, form Thornhill, Ont., lost his first match for the second consecutive tournament. He fell to Croatia's Ivo Karlovic in the second round of the Rogers Cup last week in Montreal.
Vancouver's Pospisil forced a pair of tiebreakers against Grigor Dimitrov, but the 16th-seeded Bulgarian prevailed 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) in their second-round matchup.
Pospisil saved five of six break point chances in the hard-fought match but could only break Dimitrov once in four opportunities.
In women's action, Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., faced Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.
Federer moves onto Round 2
Roger Federer took a first step toward a seventh Cincinnati title on Tuesday night, beating Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4 in his opening match.
The Swiss star won the Western & Southern Open last year. He easily handled the Spaniard, whom he has beaten in straight sets in all four of their career matches.
