Our neighbours to the southĀ took to the polls to vote for their next president on Tuesday.

And not even the myriad games going on could distract the sports world as the results started rolling in.

Some teams decided to play on the Election Night theme with endless puns and the San Jose Sharks, facing the Washington Capitals, were clear leaders in that race.

Like any good sports game, the constant tug-of-war between the leadersĀ made the night that much more exciting.

Early on, as results for Indiana and Kentucky became decisively red for Donald Trump, some became increasingly worried. Former 100-metre hurdle championĀ and Canadian Olympian Perdita FelicienĀ was jokingly ready to take in her American refugee friends.Ā 

Meanwhile in Pittsburgh, a different kind of race was taking place as Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby faced each other for the first time in their NHL careers. Votes for who would score first in the historic meeting were split and after a thrilling opening faceoff between the two franchise centres, one Conor did score. Conor Sheary that is.

Regardless of who wins the election, Penguins fans know who they'd like to see in the White House:

As the state of Florida continued to flip flop between Clinton and Trump, it reminded many sports fans of the anxiety they felt during the Cubs vs. Indians World Series Game 7.

The state of Ohio was also a nail biter and the Cleveland Cavaliers took full advantage of the attention.
