New York TV station cuts away from World Cup for tornado warning
Viewers miss last moments of match
Well this probably wasn’t a good idea.
World Cup fans in southern New York and northern Pennsylvania were subjected to the worst torture imaginable, when ABC affiliate WENY actually cut away from the Germany-Argentina final to report on a tornado warning. The network did this with six minutes left in extra time.
And the network didn’t return to the match.
So, after waiting four years for the tournament and 110 minutes of the World Cup final, a lot of viewers didn’t get to see Mario Götze’s sublime World Cup-winning goal, nor Lionel Messi’s final free kick, nor the World Cup trophy presentation.
Deadspin has a recording of the network’s gaffe and roundup of the angry tweets that accompanied the network’s move. None of them can be reposted here.
