Whitecaps re-sign goalkeeper Cannon, trade Nolly

The Vancouver Whitecaps re-signed veteran goalkeeper Joe Cannon and midfielder John Thorrington and traded goalkeeper Jay Nolly to Chicago Fire, the team announced Monday. 

Cannon and Thorrington were signed to undisclosed contracts, while Nolly was shipped to the Fire in exchange for a first-round selection in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. Cannon and Thorrington won't be eligible for selection in Monday's 2011 Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft.

"Joe and John are experienced MLS players that bring leadership, both on and off the pitch," Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie told the team’s website. "Both players enjoyed strong second halves of last season and we are excited to have them back for year two."

Cannon, 36, started 20 regular-season games for the Whitecaps, posting a 1.60 goal-against average and three shutouts. He also played in his 300th MLS game on Sept. 17 against league champions Los Angeles Galaxy.

Twice named league's top keeper

The two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year joined Vancouver after being selected in the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft from the San Jose Earthquakes.

Thorrington, 32, also found a home in Vancouver after the 2010 expansion draft. The former Chicago Fire player appeared in 11 matches for the Whitecaps, starting in nine. 

Nolly started 14 regular-season matches in the Whitecaps’ inaugural season in MLS as well as three matches in the 2011 Nutrilite Canadian Championship.
