CF Montreal rallies to record-setting victory over Toronto FC to hurt rival's playoff hopes

CF Montreal rallied with four straight goals after going down 2-0 early to beat Toronto 4-3 in an all-action contest Sunday, dealing Toronto FC a body blow in its bid to make the Major League Soccer playoffs.

There was a wild start to the game with Toronto scoring in the fifth and seventh minute, only to have Montreal respond with goals in the 19th and 21st. Only three matches in league history have seen both teams score multiple goals faster, according to Stats Perform, a sports data and analytics company.

Montreal pulled ahead in the 43rd minute and added to its lead early in the second half.

Montreal becomes the first MLS team to erase a two-goal deficit and lead at halftime since Toronto did it against NYCFC in July 2015.

Lorenzo Insigne, with two goals, and Federico Bernadeschi replied for Toronto. Insigne's second came in the 93rd minute with the Italian taking advantage of a Montreal turnover and slicing into the penalty box before chipping the ball over goalkeeper James Pantemis for his sixth goal in nine games.

Montreal (16-9-4) entered Sunday's game in second place in the East, eight places and 15 points ahead of Toronto (9-14-7).

Alistair Johnston's header in the 54th minute held up as the winner in Montreal's 4-3 victory over Toronto FC.

With the win, Montreal set single-season franchise records for victories (16) and points (52), erasing the previous marks of 15 and 49 set in 2105 when the team went 15-13-6.

Montreal, one of the league's best road teams with a 9-4-2 away record, also extended its franchise-record road win streak to five games. Montreal's nine wins, 29 goals and 29 points away from home are also club marks.

Time is running out for Toronto, which has just four matches remaining. And three of those are on the road — at Atlanta, Orlando and Philadelphia. TFC is 2-8-4 away from home this season.

The lone remaining home game is Sept. 30 against Inter Miami.

Ebobisse's winner leads Earthquakes past Whitecaps

JT Marcinkowski stopped the three shots he faced and Jeremy Ebobisse scored an early go-ahead goal as the San Jose Earthquakes earned a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday night.

Both the Earthquakes and the Whitecaps (9-13-7) had six shots. The Earthquakes had four shots on goal and the Whitecaps had three.

Thomas Hasal saved two shots for the Whitecaps.

Both teams are in action again on Saturday. The Earthquakes visit Cincinnati and the Whitecaps visit the Colorado Rapids.
