Euro 2016: France mounts 2nd-half comeback to beat Ireland
Germany easily tops Slovakia 3-0, Belgium routs Hungary 4-0
Antoine Griezmann scored two goals in quick succession early in the second half Sunday to give host France a 2-1 victory over a spirited Ireland and a spot in the European Championship quarter-finals.
Griezmann, who had a chance for a hat trick late in the match, equalized with a powerful header from near the penalty spot in the 58th minute following a cross from right back Bacary Sagna.
Three minutes later, he collected a headed knockdown from striker Olivier Giroud, took one touch to move the ball inside the area and then composed himself before slotting the ball inside the right post. It was his third goal of the tournament and his 10th for Les Bleus.
The goals came with France trailing 1-0 after Ireland midfielder Robbie Brady's second-minute penalty.
"We screamed at each other at halftime," Griezmann said. "We were chasing the game and that's the most difficult thing. But we have a strong mentality."
The goals were a boost for Griezmann, who missed a penalty for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid last month.
"I know myself well," Griezmann said. "I know that I show up in the big moments."
Griezmann nearly got a third goal in injury time but Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph made the save.
A few minutes later, Ireland slumped to the ground in exhaustion as France celebrated.
"The fans were unbelievable and we'd have loved to have gone a bit further for them. I hope we did them proud," Ireland defender Seamus Coleman said. "We only had a little corner of the ground and they were so loud and positive at the end."
The Irish finished the match with 10 men following defender Shane Duffy's red card in the 66th minute for tripping Griezmann.
France will next face either England or Iceland on Sunday in Saint-Denis.
Germany 3, Slovakia 0
Germany produced its best performance yet, beating Slovakia 3-0 and advancing to the quarter-finals.
Jerome Boateng got the World Cup winners off to a good start when he scored from outside the penalty area in the eighth minute.
Despite dominating chances and possession, Germany had to wait until the 43rd for the next goal, scored by Mario Gomez with a simple finish at the near post. Julian Draxler added the third with a volley in the 63rd after Mats Hummels got his head to a corner.
"Today was a good performance, in defence and in attack," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "But with due respect to our opponent, this was not an indicator for how the tournament will go on. We have to improve further to be successful."
Mesut Ozil had the chance to score another in the first half after Martin Skrtel conceded a penalty for a blatant shove on Gomez, but Slovakia goalkeeper Matus Kozacik guessed the right way and palmed away the spot kick.
Germany will next face either Spain or Italy in Bordeaux on Saturday.
Belgium 4, Hungary 0
Eden Hazard scored one goal and set up another to give Belgium a 4-0 win over Hungary and a quarter-final berth.
Toby Alderweireld scored first for Belgium, heading in Kevin De Bruyne's free kick in the 10th minute. Substitute Michy Batshuayi then added the second in the 78th when he was left unmarked in front of goal, scoring from Hazard's cross two minutes after coming off the bench.
Hazard then scored his own goal two minutes later. The Chelsea playmaker raced down the left flank, cut inside and beat three players before curling a shot into the bottom right corner.
Yannick Carrasco added the final goal in injury time.
Belgium will next play Wales in the quarter-finals on Friday in Lille.
