Aurelie Rivard, Brent Lakatos win gold for Canada at Paralympics
Canadians claim 5 medals on Day 2
Brent Lakatos capped off a successful day for Canada at the 2016 Rio Paralympics by winning gold in the men's 100-metre T53 final. The Montrealer won the race in 14.44 seconds.
Swimmer Aurelie Rivard won Canada's first gold of the Games by setting a world record of 27.37 to win the women's 50-metre freestyle S10 final.
Canada also added three silver medals on Friday. Alister McQueen claimed second place in the javelin F44 event, while para-cyclists Ross Wilson and Tristen Chernove won silvers in the men's C1 3,000 and C2 3,000 respectively.
Michael Sametz lost to Ireland's Eoghan Clifford in the men's C3 3,000 individual pursuit bronze-medal race. The 20-year-old Calgarian barely missed making the gold-medal final after finishing the qualifying round in third.
Five other para-swimmers also competed in finals on Friday night: Nathan Stein of Surrey, B.C., and Alec Elliot of Kitchener, Ont., in the men's S10 50 freestyle, Tess Routliffe of Caledon, Ont., and Sarah Mehain of Vernon, B.C., in the women's S7 50 freestyle, and Nathan Clement of West Vancouver in the S6 50 butterfly.
However, Canada's success didn't translate in team sports. In women's goalball, Canada lost its opening game 12-4 to Turkey while the men fell 11-3 to Brazil.
In men's wheelchair basketball, Canada fell to 0-2 after a 49-32 loss to the Netherlands.
Canada's mixed coxed four rowing team of Victoria Nolan, Meghan Montgomery, Andrew Todd, Curtis Halladay and coxswain Kristen Kit were third in their heat to advance to repechage.
