Ellie Black has won Canada's first gymnastics gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games.

The Halifax native finished first in Monday's women's all-around artistic gymnastics event with a total score of 58.150.

Madison Desch of the United States was second with 57.450 points and Flavia Lopes Saraiva of Brazil was third with 57.050.

Black trailed Desch after the vault and uneven bars, but posted the best result in balance beam and second best in floor to overtake the American and win the event.

"It's spectacular, to come here in front of the home crowd, to be able to hit my best competition, I think ever, is unreal," Black said. "To finish off with the gold is incredible, just having the whole of Canada behind me feels amazing. This is probably one of the best for me, I can't even believe it."

Isabella Onyshko of Minnedosa, Man., finished sixth out of 24 entrants. Black and Onyshko teamed up to lead Canada to silver in the team event on Sunday.
